Big bag trend: Mary Poppins is making a comeback

One way to transition back from our quarantine life to our normal busy lives is through fashion. Photography, words, styling and model: India Gustin

It is time to reintroduce big bags into the world. Micro bags have had their time under the spotlight and although we will forever cherish this Jacquemus model, in 2021 we want to be able to dump all we own into our bag of tricks.

Get ready for scheduled bag cleanings and receipt throwing as we come back full circle to these larger than life classics. In 2020 we had minimal possibilities to go out and therefore had little to bring around with us. Even schools no longer saw the use of schoolbags. Hopefully, this year will be the year that we go back to our routine of having multiple outfit changes and forgotten makeup inside our bags.

These jumbo bags were seen a few times down the runway in SS21 collections. They varied from Christian Dior’s timeless tote to logo-stamped basket totes at Celine.

Nanushka played around with the textile and used camel leather for their bowling bags. Then entered Loewe. Their bags have all been made to stand for pure elegance and flattering shapes. Their newest bag, the Shell, was inspired by the ceramist, George Ohr. Jonathan Anderson specifically focused on Ohr’s attention to creating creases and dimples for maximum volume.

With the pandemic still present, the transition back to our once busy lives will be slow. Even though our clothing may say ‘I am still in quarantine mode’, our bags will say ‘Lets go out and bring everything we own with us’.

2020 was the year of sweats and we are not ready to let go of this trend just yet. Style this with your favourite pandemic loungewear and sneakers to really demonstrate the progress. Pair it with your casual favourite accessories and you’re ready to go.

Grocery run. Instead of using a disposable bag, use your biggest, most prestige tote.

These large totes are much more workable than anything else. Just toss it around your shoulder or snuggle it under your arm depending on its silhouette. The tote is a much more chuck-everything-into-it bag whilst a larger pouch clutch will elevate any look because of how impractical it looks. Yet all will bring out the Mary Poppins in you.

So maybe by Summer 2021 we will have made a bit more progress with the pandemic. Maybe we will be able to actually fully go out and hang out with friends without having to constantly measure our distance from them. These robust totes don’t need to be considered ‘too bulky’ if you style the with more elegance.

Simplicity is key, whether it is just a plain straight cut dress or a monochrome trouser and shirt look. A chic errand run will include a basic button-down shirt with Bermuda shorts and a pair of sandal heels to go with it.  We may just need to get used to the fact that we need take every opportunity we get to dress up, even if that includes just going to the supermarket. Be more sustainable and instead of using a disposable grocery bag, dump all your groceries into your cosmic bag.
