The Barcelona Gipsy Balkan Orchestra (BGKO) performed in the United Kingdom for the first time, bringing their unique blend of Balkan, Roma, and klezmer music to British audiences. The band played at Islington Assembly Hall in London on 20 February and a Birmingham venue on 21 February, marking a long-awaited moment for their fans in the UK.
BGKO, known for reinterpreting traditional Eastern European music with a modern and multicultural approach, has built a global following with their passionate performances and diverse musical influences. Their UK debut was part of Serbian Month 2025, an annual cultural festival celebrating Serbian heritage and Balkan music in the UK.

London was a city we had been looking forward to
Julien Chanel, BGKO’s manager, expressed the band’s excitement about finally performing in London, a city with a deep appreciation for diverse musical traditions.
“We always try to capture the essence of a song and express it in our way. Our strength comes from each member’s different musical backgrounds. first visits are always special, and London was a city we had been looking forward to.”
The event was organised by Gise Event, a UK-based promoter known for hosting successful concerts and cultural events featuring artists worldwide. Emre Boluk, director of Gise Event, highlighted the importance of BGKO’s UK debut and the significance of expanding their event locations.
“This is BGKO’s first time in the UK, performing in London and Birmingham. it is also our first event in Birmingham. Balkan music has great energy, and BGKO represents it well. the venues we chose help ensure a high-quality experience for the audience.”

A night to remember for fans
Fans at the concerts were captivated by BGKO’s passionate performance and distinctive sound. While many were already familiar with the band through streaming platforms and social media, experiencing their music live proved to be an entirely different experience.
Tansel Anatoli, 38, from Bulgaria, said: “It was even more impressive than I expected. More people should hear this band.”
The atmosphere was described as energetic and deeply emotional, with the audience fully immersed in the music. Many danced and sang along to BGKO’s unique reinterpretations of traditional Balkan songs, creating a sense of unity and celebration.

BGKO’s UK debut marked an important moment in introducing Balkan and Eastern European music to a broader audience. With London’s reputation as a cultural melting pot, events like this highlight the richness of diverse musical traditions and their continued relevance in today’s interconnected world.
