Overflowing clothing bins plague Hornsey Road

Local residents have again been faced with overflowing clothing from the textile recycling point on Hornsey Road.

The recycling points are in place to collect unused and unwanted textiles from the community. According to Islington council’s website, “Some textiles and shoes are reused while others are re-manufactured either within the UK or across the globe.”

Overflowing clothes and bins have been a regular occurrence for local residents, with clothes strewn across the pavement.

The bin area along Hornsey Road is facilitated by the council recycling department and is regularly reported by local residents as being in an undesirable state.

The bins have been reported to the council through Twitter along with images, all painting a similar picture. Islington council have previously replied to residents’ complaints on Twitter, saying, “This is a problem that is not easy to address. The basic issue is the anti-social individuals who are dipping into the textile banks, sorting through what they want to use or sell and then leaving the rest on the ground.

“This is national and not just an Islington problem. However, we are liaising with our colleagues in Pollution to try and solve this issue.”

Local residents feel the issues needs more attention. One resident also pointed out that people need to take more responsibility.

Fuad Maslin, a 24-year-old chef said, “I feel like people don’t put much effort any more, due to rubbish being left out till night when the council pick it up. The foxes get there as soon as the sun has gone, the same as the people who go through it.”

Islington Council were asked for a response to the issue today, but at press time no comment was received.
