Multi-tasking has become an inevitable and natural part of a living a busy life. But some tasks, while they may appear simple, can put people’s lives in danger.
Driving requires full attention, yet many drivers still casually text while manoeuvring a vehicle. In order to raise awareness of the dangers of driving and texting, the second National Red Thumb Day will take place this May 12th, 2016.
Three percent accident increase
According to the Department of British Transport Report 2016, there were 1,780 road accidents in 2015 by September, showing an increase of 3% from the previous year.
Devon County Council’s road safety team adopted the idea from the US, and is now bringing it to London. The aim of the campaign is to reach as many drivers as possible through social media in order to change people’s bad habits on the road.
Coldplay backing
The campaign has received backing of high profile celebrities such as Coldplay who tweeted: “Road safety is a cause that is close to my heart.”
The Road Vehicle Legislation Act 2003, made it illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving or riding a motorcycle. Drivers could risk being issued with a fixed penalty notice, resulting in three penalty points on their driving licence and a fine of £100. If a case goes to court, they face disqualification and a fine of up to £1,000.
