In February, Hackney schools decided to introduce coding lessons for the month, as part of the ‘Get Hackney Coding’ initiative, which aimed to encourage local schools to introduce coding into the curriculum.

Hackney resident, Samara Jolina, 35, said: “The modern world seems to revolve around technology these days, so I think that teaching coding and computer programming in schools is a brilliant idea. I also think it would enhance people’s career prospects when they leave school.”
In a statement on the council’s website, the Mayor of Hackney says: “The new computer curriculum is helping to teach the next generation the skills needed to help open opportunities for future careers especially those in the tech sector, an industry that is growing exponentially and has a significant base in Hackney, as home to Tech City, the UK’s largest tech cluster.”
He further stated: “Being taught the new curriculum in schools not only helps to forge a future career, but can also help with day-to-day life skills such as problem solving and team work.”
The coding month included a competition which involved children designing their own computer games with the chance to have it made by ‘Technology Will Save Us’.
Hackney newsagent, Tezzo Meigh, 42, said: “I don’t know anything about programming but I think teaching it in schools would be a good idea as nowadays technology is a massive part of our society.” He added “I think children pick up things really quickly, so introducing something like that into local schools would be great.
