Cinemas may be closed but Netflix has us covered.

Coronavirus news coverage won’t quit, so plug in that HDMI cord and open up your old pal Netflix. From indies to classics and even comedies, here are six films to ground you during these uncertain times…

1. Shrek (2001)

Reminisce with your favourite Scottish ogor while embracing the simplicity of childhood. Follow Shrek and Donkey on their adventure to save Princess Fiona in this fantasy film released almost 20 years ago. 18+ friends— do not fret—Shrek has its share of mature jokes to keep you laughing (i.e. the Lord Farquaad innuendo; remove the “r” and say his name again). Despite the film’s hidden adult content, Shrek is rated U, so whether you need to keep the kids occupied or just want a break from the news, this film is for you!

2. Superbad (2007)

Rated 15+, Superbad may not be the comedy to share with the family, but it’s sure to keep your spirits up through this complicated time. Enjoy slapstick humour with stars like Jonah Hill and Emma Stone on a quest to make the most of senior year at their very American high school. Remember the simplicity of secondary school when your biggest problems were drinking underage and trying to lose your virginity. Times are hard enough, so take a load off with Superbad, a film considered “sweetly absurd” by New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis.

3. This Is The End (2013)

As Coronavirus fear grows, relax to this depiction of hilarious Hollywood stars trying to survive the end of the world. How fitting? With James Franco, Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson, This Is the End is an apocalyptic story of six celebrities stuck in a Los Angeles mansion as the world erupts in flames and people become hysteric. Sound familiar? Turn on Netflix to see if they survive, and be prepared to laugh out loud as these characters turn fear into funny. This Is the End is rated 15, with raunchy themes and crude language, so parents may want to stay up late for this one.

4. Lady Bird (2017)

It’s about time you threw an indie film into the mix. Being stuck home with family is not always easy, but this heart warming film about the trials and tribulations of daughterhood will remind you it’s all worth it. Lady Bird follows high school student Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson’s journey of self discovery by means of a tense relationship with her mother. A story of independence and tough love, Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet and is sure to keep your tear ducts in check this quarantine. Rated 15.

5. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Another film for the whole family, The Wizard of Oz is a classic that reminds us “there is no place like home”! So while you’re stuck inside, Rated U, this film takes you on a journey with Dorothy of rural Kansas to the wonderful world of Oz. The Wizard of Oz is a journey of self-exploration as Dorothy meets friends and foe in hopes of getting home.  You’ll be delighted to know the American Film Institute considers The Wizard of Oz the “10th best film of all time”.

So buckle up and prepare to binge, quarantine may be unsettling, but your film choice doesn’t have to be!
