As the cost-of-living emergency bites this winter, councils will collaborate with organisations from all around local boroughs to keep community centres open as warm community spaces, giving locals a break.
As households deal with high energy costs at home, Islington council said it would offer assistance and additional cash to ensure that organisations can provide “warm community spaces” in winter.
On its website, Islington Council says it is offering “free, non-judgemental spaces where people can go to stay warm, maybe enjoy some company and a hot drink”.
It has a list of all the hubs in the area that are open for visitors. The Islington warm hub space launched in October and has already welcomed in many people.
A “safe space where everyone is looked after”
Islington local resident Mohammed Mahmoud, 57, who has visited the hub, said: “I’ve now been there twice and have been shocked at the kindness and love shown towards me; it really feels like a safe space where everyone is looked after.
“I can’t afford to leave my heating on in my own house, this place is heaven sent for me as I can come and relax and be in a warm space that’ll help me and others in my same position.
“I was shocked and concerned at the amount of people that were there, this shows how the awful impacts of this crisis and what its doing to everyone.”
With various locations now opened in Southwark, Brent and Harrow, local councils will be looking to develop their own hubs and create more across the capital.
Warm Hubs not only provide warmth, but a place to enjoy others’ company. They are welcoming and inclusive spaces for all community members.
With opportunities for a variety of visiting organisations, such as the district council, think communities, and healthcare providers, the hubs offers residents a place to socialise, participate in activities, receive advice on how to reduce bills and access financial support.
