Lockdown in England has been harsh on the beauty industry as a whole due to its personal nature. Nail salons throughout the UK have had to close and hesitantly reopen over the past year. This has inspired some people taking matters into their own hands and experimenting with new trends, whilst others are patiently waiting to get their perfect manicure again by a professional.
COVID-19 has been tough on the hands, with government advice encouraging people to wash them more frequently and to keep them away from your face. So in case you felt like you’d give it a go yourself, or your hands need a little TLC, here are the top 5 nail art trends of 2021…
- 3D nails

Feel like pushing the boat out? Look no further – this trend is for you. Lockdown measures have meant that people haven’t been able to express themselves like usual through make up or clothing. One way of expressing themselves is through nail art and what could stand out more than art coming off the nail! Professional nail artist Hannah Louisa, 22, says that she thinks “people should…leave their comfort zone with nails, the longer and more extravagant the better!”. She also adds that her business has suffered as a result of the lockdowns in the UK, saying she hasn’t been able to “get her bag”.
2. Multicoloured nails

If you’re looking for something a bit simpler why not try multicoloured nails? No skill required and super easy to do at home, all this trend needs is a few different nail varnish colours and the colour combination possibilities are endless!
3. Short nails

The low maintenance aesthetic set in last year along with the loungewear trend. With the salons closed, keeping your nails short might seem like the easiest option in the meantime. Finish with a clear or light pink coat for the perfect natural look. A salon regular student Lauren Gallagher, 21, says that she’ll be going for “a classic shiny nude” so she can “feel like a proper woman again” once the salons reopen. She also adds that the “salons closing impacted me big time”.
4. False stick-on nails

In absence of the professionals, people have turned to stick-on nails to get their manicure fix. They are easy to purchase online, simple to apply, reusable and often cheaper than the real thing. What’s not to love about this trend!
5. Swirly nails

The 70’s are back! And with them comes the retro swirly trend. Throw it back with these funky nails.
