International Women’s Day is a worldwide day that celebrates progressive achievements of all women across the globe, whether that is a social, economic, cultural or political achievement.

Celebrated on the 8th of March annually, International Women’s Day is one of the most important days for women, as it’s also a day to raise awareness about women’s equality and gender parity. The holiday also seeks to highlight women’s fundraisers and charities everywhere where the ultimate goal is to support women.

It’s 2021. What do we do to celebrate women all around us, and why is International Women’s Day still so important?

Alexandra Cimpeanu, a 20-year-old student believes that “women should be celebrated every day” and that International Women’s Day is a way to “greatly cherish the ones who raised us, the ones we tell our secrets to and be grateful for everything they do for us”.

In today’s times there are still issues that need addressing in terms of equality between men and women.

“There are still stereotypes and prejudices towards women, but we’re getting there,” Cimpeanu said.

One issue that has always been present can be seen in the “generation gap and the way people are raised, especially in lower developed countries, where the belief that women should stay in the kitchen and raise the kids, whereas men are the ones working, is still there”, she added.

Women have fought for equal rights all around the world, frankly since forever.

Movements and protests have surfaced throughout the years. One of the recent one is Time’s Up charity movement, which raises money to support victims of sexual harassment in the workplace. It was founded on the 1st of January by Hollywood celebrities in response to Weinstein effect and the #MeToo movement.

In terms of the Time’s Up movement’s impact on International Women’s Day, Victoria Calabrese, a 20-year-old student, said that “there has been a lot of progress made when it comes to reporting sexual misconduct in the workplace, but this is mainly in the public industries. I think that the everyday woman might still feel that she can’t speak up as much.”

Calabrese added: “There has to be a change as well, in the conversation that men have with each other about sexual harassment, it shouldn’t fall only to women to educate in regard to this topic.”

Looking forward into the future, women should be celebrated every day, equally as much as men, and the barrier should be lifted when it comes to inequality. Everyone should know how to and be educated about how to treat everyone equally.
