People in Holloway Road are becoming increasingly worried after the latest developments regarding the spread of the Coronavirus around the world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning as there are fears that the Coronavirus is getting out of control. The outbreak in Northern Italy concerns the researchers, as the number of confirmed cases soared from three on Friday morning to at least 229 by Monday evening. At least seven of these cases have died.

“Of course I’m worried, who isn’t? I thought it was under control, and then Italy and China happened. Maybe we’re next, who knows?” said Amir Ghezzal, 37, shop owner.

The United Kingdom, along with other countries across the world, is getting prepared in case the Coronavirus turns into a pandemic.

The death toll in China has risen from 71 to 2,663. More than 77,000 people in the country have been infected. More cases of the virus continue to emerge, mostly in China. The percentage of infected people who die is between 1% and 2%; however, WHO has warned that the mortality rate is still unknown.

“Honestly, I think that the global reaction to the virus was prolonged. I think China didn’t take it seriously in the beginning and valuable time was lost. Now, we run after the virus, and we try to prepare for the worst,” said Alan Scott, 31, solicitor.

To help contain the virus, WHO advises people to wash their hands frequently with soap or antibacterial hand gel, to avoid close contact with people who are ill and to not touch their eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. It also advises that people catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue, bin it and then wash their hands.
