International Women’s Day; the day of celebrating women. As a result of the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gap Report, the theme this year is ‘Press for Progress’.
The report revealed that gender parity is over 200 years away, so there has never been a more important time to keep motivated. Taking place on March 8th with events leading up to it, this day will be one you won’t want to forget.
Holloway Road local Kaitlyn Smith-Dixon, 28, a retail worker, is adamant that the day is an important one. “I feel that this year it is more important than ever to celebrate women. I think the events that are taking place are a great way to gain recognition for women,” she said.
International Women’s Day was first declared in 1975 by the United Nations. In later years it earned huge recognition for celebrating women from all walks of life.
In London, many organisations and companies are involved with the day, including Harper’s Bazaar and The Smilers organisation, a charity that helps empower women. The International Women’s Day museum are also involved as they begin hosting events leading up to the celebration in February.
The events held at the museum include film screenings showing women’s representation in advertising, and inspiring women in the creative sectors.
The events continue on from the Phenomenal women’s tea party hosted on the 3rd of March by The Smiler organisation to a panel debate at the museum of brands.
Another Holloway local, Yolanda Agbola, 45, barista said: “For me it’s an important day because of the history that it holds behind it and the value that it brings to our culture today.”
Finally, Lucas Anderson, 24, a construction worker said: “All the events are a great way to host empowered women, to show others that you can be inspired and be successful.”
