A new chapter in Arsenal’s history

After Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester United this Sunday, it could be said that Arsene Wenger has officially lost his hold over Arsenal. But after 22 years managing the team, what impact has he had, not only over the course of the team’s history, but for the future of football?

When he first joined as manager in 1996, Wenger changed the status of the Premier League from a newbie league to one of the best and most competitive in the world. Alex Ferguson, former Manchester United coach, stated that: “When Arsene came to Arsenal, he changed a lot of the eating habits and fitness regimes at the club.”

He went on to say that “He (Arsene) was ahead of the game at that particular time. We took examples, as we always tried to take examples from anybody who was improving.”

The fierce rivalry between the two teams made the Premier League during the 90’s and early 2000’s, with the two teams always finishing in the top three.

The latest news is who will replace the 68-year-old. The bookies’ favourite is former Barcelona boss, Luis Enrique. There are claims he’s already had three meetings with the club.

Former Chelsea boss, Carlo Ancelotti, has also declared interest in the role, and Celtic have said that they would allow Brendan Rogers to speak with Arsenal.

However, Ivan Gazidis, Chief Executive of Arsenal, said in a recent interview that there is strong interest in Mikel Arteta, a former Arsenal captain, who is currently working alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Gazidis’ recent interview also raised questions. He stated that Wenger made his decision to leave in a meeting, whereas Wenger claimed he was forced to step down earlier than he hoped.

Either way, after 22 years, Arsenal fans are going to have to adjust to new changes.

Matthew Scholder, 38, a construction worker on Holloway Road said: “He definitely has one of the best reputations in football, in England and abroad, so he’s leaving on a high.”

Adam McNae, a 28-year-old barista stated: “He’s left a lasting impact at Arsenal, that’s for sure.”

Many feel it’s time for change. “Sometimes it reaches a point where you need to move on,” stated Scott Welby, 25, who works at a grocery stall near Waitrose on Holloway Road.

James Pope, 54, an avid Arsenal fan, agreed. “Arsenal does need change. It’s time,” he said.

Wenger’s departure may be a breath of fresh air, but he will definitely not be forgotten by the football world.
