Get Fit Without Spending A Penny

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to put on your trainers and head out to the fresh air or… to your living room.

Chris Bell, 24, a personal trainer thinks there are definitely ways to ditch the gym and go out to the fresh air. However, if your aim is to gain muscle outside the gym, Chris says: “From a building muscle point of view, it is quite difficult outside the gym, because you need some resistance, like a reasonable amount of weights. Outside your gym you might struggle with finding those weights. Of course you can do stuff with your own bodyweight, obviously press-ups and sit ups, but it’s limited.”

If you’re not aiming to become a culturist, but just to get a little bit more toned, gaining muscle in your living room is a great idea! Youtube’s different range of workout videos is huge and you can watch those for free.

“There are many different options you can choose from. The main thing is to figure out what suits YOU!” said Chris.

“Running, power walks – again there are multiple Youtube videos out there that are an hour long and give you a proper cardio workout that will leave you drenched!” he added.

Outside gyms are another option to get healthier and fit – and they’re free! The equipment may seem of standard level compared to the gyms, but they still do the job. Elthorne Park, Paradise Park, Whittington Park, Spa Fields and Rosemary Gardens are a few you can find in Islington.

As important as it is to have the right pair of kicks and appropriate gear, it is more important to have the right attitude.

“It is more about the mind-set,” said Chris.

If you’re new to working out, Chris Bell recommends that you don’t start off with intense two-hour workouts five or six times a week.

“What you almost want to do is to work out as little as possible at the beginning to get any results.”

“So if you are doing three moderately difficult sessions a week, I think it is a good place to start. And from there you can always do a little bit more if you need to,” he added.

The advantages over gym-training are endless. No costs or ties to memberships and every jog is different. So go outside and give your mind and body a little bit of love!
