StreetPlay takes over Islington, Hackney and Haringey

The days of children at home glued to the television and playing video games are over. The new active playful idea that skipped its way into Islington, Hackney, Haringey and all the sister boroughs are the ‘Street Play Policy’.

This new policy allows residents to apply for a street order, which allows their street to be closed for up to three hours per week.

Mother of two, Nisha Buchannan, who is a resident of Islington borough, thinks this new project is a great idea as well as being a successful act with great potential.

“This is a fantastic idea. It’s a pleasure to see all these children enjoying themselves, playing together and most importantly being happy,” the mother said.

For Ms Buchannan, this project is very convenient. It saves me from taking time out to travel to the park, as well as worrying about my children’s safety when it comes to cars and busy areas.

Street Play’ is a way of getting young children to stay active, whilst getting familiar with the other children and residents within the area.

Vehicles of residences and visitors will still be able to enter these play streets, but at a walking safe speed.

Cllr Andy Hull, Islington Councils executive member for finance and performance stated that the Street Play project is a great idea, creating a fun and safe play area right on their doorsteps.

The most successful Play Street day was held on Canning Road, Highbury, last December which was organised by local parents and supported by Liberal Democrat councillors. They also beckoned the council to spread the scheme across the borough.

Terry Stacy, Highbury Lib Dem councillor, who stewarded the Canning Road street day agreed that the play streets are an amazing way to get kids up and active, aswell as residents getting out aswell, for fresh air and also making it an opportunity to meet the other neighbours.
